Frequently Asked Questions
1. Where can I get an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of your next book?
ARCs of any of my books are usually available on request via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. These copies are avaliable in limited numbers and your request must be approved in order to receive one. Please note that I’m not personally able to supply ARCs.
2. Do you have pre-written questions to guide book club discussions?
You can find a set of questions for each of my books in the Book Club Corner of this website.
3. When did you start writing?
I started writing back in 2008 once my two eldest daughters had left home to go to university. I always thought that I would write children’s books because I used to make up stories for my daughters at bedtime. One day, one of my daughters read about a writing competition in a magazine and encouraged me to write a novel and enter. I didn’t think I could do it but that night, I came up with an idea for a book. I started writing the next day and I’ve never stopped since.
4. What was your journey to becoming an author?
It took me a few months to write a first draft of my first novel, Behind Closed Doors, which I then sent out to 5 agents in 2014. I received 2 rejections, 2 no-replies, and one acceptance! Before that, I wrote 7 other books but failed to find an agent, receiving around 20 rejections instead. Each rejection made me more determined to succeed so I’d write another book, hoping that one day I would get a positive response.
5. What is your creative writing process?
I always have the opening scene in my head and usually know the end of the story. When I start writing the book, I’m not too sure how I’m going to get from one to the other but I let the characters take me on that journey. It’s the most fun part of being an author!
6. Which authors have influenced your writing the most?
I think the main influence on my writing has been Agatha Christie.
7. Do you have a favourite book and author?
They often change, but one of my all-time favourites is Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.
8. Are you planning on writing anything other than the Thriller genre?
Yes, I have always wanted to write Family Dramas. I recently had the opportunity to write my first one, The Dilemma, which was published in 2019. It tells the story of a married couple, Adam and Livia, on the day of her 40th birthday. Both are hiding a devastating secret from each other and the story explores how far they’re willing to go to give each other a last few hours of happiness.
9. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
My advice is to never, ever give up. If you really want to be a writer, you will get there. Of course, there will be disappointments and you will probably face a lot of rejection at first. But you just have to allow yourself to be disappointed, move past it, and go on to write another book. If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone.
10. Are there any Television or Film plans underway for any of your books?
Yes, three of my novels have been optioned for major screen adaptations and are being produced by Elizabeth Fowler at Clear Pictures Entertainment.
The film of The Breakdown, titled Blackwater Lane, starring Minka Kelly (Euphoria), Maggie Grace (Fear The Walking Dead), and Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding) has been sold to distributors around the world.
The films of The Therapist, titled The Circle, and Behind Closed Doors will be shooting in 2024.
